Chandrashilla & Tungnath Trek

 Chandrashilla is situated at an altitude of 4000m above sea level. It is a steep 5 km trek from Chopta valley. Chandrashilla literally means "Moon Rock".

Chandrashilla offers 360° view of beautiful mountain peaks including Nanda devi, Trishul,Bandarpunch, Chaukhamba and many more. 

 Importance of Chandrashilla 

• When lord Rama killed Ravana , he was accused of killing a brahmin then Lord Rama spent his time in penance here. 

                          

                    

          

 Tungnath (highest Lord shiva temple) 

Tungnath literally mean "Lord of the peaks". It is located at an altitude of 12,000feet. It is 3.5km away from chopta valley and 1.5 km below the Chandrashilla summit. Tungnath is one of the highest Lord shiva templetemple in the world. It is also the highest of all five kedars in Uttarakhand. 

The doors of Tungnath open in May and close in November.  In winters, Tungnath Baba's darshan can be done in Makhumath Temple. 

  

                    Importance of Tungnath

During the Mahabharata, the Pandavas were cursed to kill their relatives, to avoid this, they worshipped Lord Shiva, so Lord Shiva took the form of a bull in Kedarnath, and the Pandavas recognized him, then the front part of the bull began to sunk, as soon Bhima try to stop him from being sunken, Lord shiva splits his body and the Pandavas were freed from sin, thereafter worship of Lord shiva's heart and soul started in the tungnath.

Both Chandrashilla & Tungnath temple are located in Chopta Valley. The distance of Tungnath is 3.5 km from Chopta valley & the distance of Chandrashilla is 1.5 from Chopta valley, which together makes it a 5km steep trek. 

  How to reach Chopta valley

Dehradun - Chamba - Srinagar - ukhimath - chopta valley 

* Take a bus from dehradun to chamba , which may take around 5 hours to reach chamba. 

*  chamba to Srinagar via bus which may take around 3-4 hours to reach Srinagar. 

* Visit bus stand at Srinagar, take a bus to ukhimath or kund.

* share or book a cab from ukhimath to chopta valley which may cost around 200/person . The average distance between ukhimath and chopta may be covered in 2hrs.

             Hotels & campsite in chopta valley 

* The hotels & campsites in Chopta valley are costly. They charge somewhere around 800-1200/person . 

* The water in winter freezes, so better to full up buckets in daytime. 

* Make sure to carry a powerbank, only solar power is available for few hours. 

                       

    

    🔑 Key points to remember before you start your trek ! 

1. Must carry a water bottle, no availability of water during the trek. 

2. Must carry pass, provided by the forest department. 

3. Do not use shortcut trail during the trek. 

4. Must carry fruits, chocolates to boost up energy. 

5. The trail is Rocky somewhere, so hiking boots are important. 

6 . Better to carry warm clothes. 

          Trek to Chandrashilla & Tungnath 

The trek is quite uphill, walk slowly, take rest, there is no water facility throughout the way, so carry a water bottle with you. The trek is moderate , good for beginners. The trek offers beautiful rhododendron trees, beautiful scenaries, birds and many more. The trek can be done in 1 day up and down. This might take around 5-6 hrs depend on your stamina level.
