Sattal Trek Harsil - Saat Taal Lake Trek | Dharali
Sattal is made up of two words "saat" meaning "seven" & "Taal" meaning "lake". Sattal literally meaning "seven lakes".
Sattal is located in Dharali Village which is just 3km away from popular hill station Harsil valley. Sattal is elevated an altitude of 10,000 feet. Sattal is said to offer breathtaking views of Mt. Shrikanth, Mukhba village, Mt. Bandarpunch & Gangotri peaks.
Opposite to the name, only five lakes are left here, the rest are dried up. The remaining five lakes are as follows :-
1. Mardunga/Mridunga Tal
Elevation :- 9,600ft . This is the first lake of sattal. The lake is surrounded by small trees, these trees make a sound similar to that of "Mridanga" so called mridunga taal.
2. Chadkiya Tal I
Elevation :- 9,918ft. This is the second lake lies 700m above the mardunga tal. This is the biggest of all lakes. During first sight you won't see any water as this lake is covered by the green grass carpet. You'll see the ground shaking as soon as you step on the lake. It is also reffered as shaking lake. This lake has grass carpet on the upper side and water below the grass carpet.
3. Chadkiya Tal II (recently built)
This lake is recently built on the bank of chadkiya tal I. Surrounded by well- defined stone boundary.
4. Baamniya Tal
Elevation :- 9,962ft . The fourth-most tal of sattal. It is also called bakria tal, as the name suggest it is a good place for cattle grazzers.
5. Rikhya Tal
Elevation :- 10,034 ft. "Rikhya" in garhwali language means "Bear". This is the last & elevated lake of sattal. This area might be having a good number of black bears.
The lost lake :- Daabriya Tal
Elevation :- 9,919ft.
Daabriya in garhwali refers to " Stones". The whole structure of the lake is still the same but there is no water.
Trek to sattal
Sattal trek is an excellent choice for beginners. The trek starts from Dharali Village . It is just a 3km trek from Dharali village. Initially the trek followed step stairways & afterwards the trail is straight uphill. This 3km trek takes one thorough beautiful apple orchards, deaodar, pine trees and mesmerizing streamlet.
There is plenty of water flowing sideways through the trail. One should carry food, Maggie and other edible itmes from Dharali market because there's no dhaba that falls during the trek.
Best time to do sattal trek
In winters (dec-feb) :- In winters, sattal is covered in white blanket of snow. Though the snow may be around 3-4 feet but that too worth it . You may find difficulties during the winter trek because there's too much Snow. One should carry waterproof trekking shoes and trek pants.
In winters, Sattal is best trekking destination for both adventure & nature lovers. Those who wants to experience live snow, must do sattal trek during dec-jan.
Where to stay?
There are plenty of hotels in Dharali & Harsil you can opt for. But if want peace and calm environment you can opt for homestays. Though the charge of the homestays is higher than that of hotels but that too worth it.
